240 Volt Circuits for Ovens and Dryers

Understanding 240 Volt Circuit Requirements

Question: I have a 240 outlet for my dryer.

  • Can I modify it so it will be a double outlet and run my 240 volt electric oven also?
  • I will hire someone to do this, but I want to make sure I know what I’m asking for.

Thanks.

Thanks for your electrical question Beki.

240 Volt Circuit Requirements and What Your Options Are

  1. A dedicated 240 circuit is required for the electric  dryer, and a dedicated 240 volt circuit is required for the electric oven.
  2. Combining the electric dryer and the electric oven on the same circuit will cause the circuit to overload.
  3. The circuit breaker size may not be increased in sized either as that would most likely cause a house fire.
  4. The solution is to have an additional dedicated 240 volt circuit installed specifically for your oven.
