Guide to GFCI Circuit Wiring for Outlets
Electrical Question: I am having a problem wiring GFCI outlets.
- I have just installed two GFCI outlets I followed the line in black and white, and then the line out black and white connections to the first outlet.
- I tested the Line In and I have power at the wires, the outlet tests and shows connected with a light.
- There is no line out power and when I go to the master bath and test the lines and I do not have power.
- All these outlets are on a GFCI breaker in the panel.
- I cannot figure out why the outlet with live power in and showing connected will not work at the plugs.
Any thoughts, and or do you need more info.
Thanks, Jesse.

How to Wire Two GFCI Outlets

Application: GFCI Wiring for an Outlet Circuit.
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate – Best if wired by a Licensed Electrical Contractor.
Tools Required: Basic Electricians Pouch Hand Tools and a Voltage Tester.
Estimated Time: Depends on personal level experience, ability to work with tools and the number of GFI outlets that will be added.
Precaution: Identify the bathroom GFI outlet circuit, turn it OFF and Tag it with a Note before working with the wiring.
Notice: Installing additional GFCI Outlet Wiring should be done according to local and national electrical GFCI Codes with a permit and be inspected.
Typical Wiring Methods for Two GFCI Outlets
- GFCI Outlets and Circuit Breakers
- A GFCI circuit may be protected by either a GFCI Circuit Breaker or a GFCI Outlet, but not both.
- Having two sources of GFI protection can create nuisance trips of the devices, therefore I would select one or the other.
- Bathroom GFCI Outlet
- When installing GFCI protection for bathroom outlets it is best to install a GFCI Outlet instead of a GFCI circuit breaker because it is not very convenient to leave the bathroom and go to the panel to reset the GFI breaker.
- GFCI Outlet Circuit for a Bathroom
- Where there are more than one bathrooms on the same required 20 amp circuit, then it is best to have a GFCI outlet in each bathroom, so that if one trips off it will only affect that bathroom and not the others.

Bathroom Light and Outlet Problem
Electrical Question #1: My bathroom lights went out and now none of the lights or electrical outlets in the master bath or master bedroom are working, what could be the problem?
- Bathroom Electrical Problem
I went to my bathroom and turned on the lights that are above the mirror (no exhaust fan) The lights went out and now none of the lights or electrical outlets in the master bath or master bedroom, which is attached to master bath, are working.
- Checked the Circuit Breakers
I looked at the breakers to see if any of them were tripped and they weren’t. I turned them all of anyway and turned them back on.
- Restored the Power
Everything came back on in the bedroom and bathroom but when I turned the lights back on in the bathroom it did the same thing.
- Lost Power
Now nothing will come on.
This electrical wiring question came from: Heather, a Homeowner in Indiana.
Related Question #2:
The bathroom GFCI outlet has no power but the lights work, what is the problem?
My wife used a hair dryer. The power went out and when we reset the breaker most everything came back on. The bathroom on second floor the GFCI outlet had no power but the lights work. The upstairs bathroom has no power in the GFCI outlet or lights. I reset a third GFCI in the basement, but no change. The breaker is in the basement. I replaced both GFCI outlets on 2nd and 3rd floor with no results. An outlet in the master bedroom also is not working although on the other side of the room all outlets have power. I can’t seem to figure it out. The 2nd floor GFCI has two wires and ground. The 3rd floor has four wires and a ground.

- Bathroom Light Power Source
It is possible that the vanity light power source comes from a GFCI outlet that is located in one of the bathrooms.
- Inspect the Light Switch and Fixture
Make sure the light switch and fixture do not have am accumulation of steam or moisture which can cause the GFCI outlet to trip off.
- Check the Light Bulbs and the Fixture
Replace any light bulbs that may be faulty. Up to this point, if everything looks OK then the wiring of the light fixture and the circuit splice connections will need to be checked for a bad or deteriorated connection and then repairs must be performed as needed..
- Reset the GFI Outlet
After the checks and repairs have been made turn off the light switch and reset the GFI Outlet by pressing in the RESET Button.
- Further Electrical Wiring Inspections
If the preceding checks did not reveal any problems then the circuit that supplies power to the bathroom lights will need to be identified and tested for the cause of the fault. All the affected lights that are controlled by the light switch should be opened so the electrical wiring may be inspected for burnt wiring and faulty connections.
