Electrical Outlets: Kitchen Island Outlet Wiring Tips

Electrical Outlets Question:

I need to install a receptacle in a new kitchen island and I only have 1 inch clearance from the drawers to the inside of the wall.

Can I use a pancake box and do they make rectangle pancake boxes?

Jim C.

Hi Jim - Great Question!
Been there - done that, and yes - there are a few shallow metal receptacle boxes, cut-in style with the ears or standard. Keep in mind that the receptacle should be a GFI or fed off of a GFI controlled circuit so your box is going to be tight, but it can be done, just be patient and plan it out and make sure to leave enough room for the cover if your mounting the box close to the counter top.

You may want to wrap electrical tape around the receptacle to prevent contact of the side terminal screws with the metal box.
