Install Ceiling Fans

ceiling-fan-installation Summary: Take the mystery out of ceiling fan wiring. Ceiling Fans are a great way to lower your energy bill.

Installing Ceiling Fans Complete Step-by-Step with Wiring Diagrams

Ceiling Fans can help Save Energy
Here’s how ceiling fans assist a home’s energy efficiency, according to the American Lighting Association:
The air movement from a ceiling fan makes the occupants feel more comfortable. Ceiling fans cool in the summer by wind chill.

In the summer, a ceiling fan makes the air seem as much as eight degrees (Fahrenheit) cooler.

The breeze of a ceiling fan can make a temperature of 78-80 degrees feel like 72, so the air conditioning thermostat can stay set at 78, resulting in a lower electric bill.

Energy Savings with Ceiling Fans

Replacing an existing fixture with a ceiling fan or adding one to a new location will require you to select a ceiling electrical box that is approved for ceiling fans. This and a few other issues are covered along with typical in home wiring diagrams.More than one-third of U.S. households did not have a single ceiling fan as of 2001, according to U.S. Department of Energy Data. Households that did have such fans reportedly averaged 2.8 fans per home!
Research show that there was a big difference in ceiling fan use in various regions and states.
Almost 85% of homes in Florida had at least one ceiling fan, yet 53% of people in California were completely
without these simple energy-saving devices.

Audio about Installing Ceiling Fans

Wiring a Ceiling Fan There are a variety of ways to wire a ceiling fan.
Here are a few typical ways to help you understand how to install your fan.

With this method the ceiling fan operates by the pull chains only.

If you have this situation and you do not wish to have a wall switch installed, then the solution would be to purchase a ceiling fan with a remote control unit.

Now your remote control will take the place of the switch. Most of the remote controls will allow you to select three speeds for fan control and three levels of light.

Remote Control Units for Ceiling Fans

  • Ceiling fan remote controls can be extremely useful, especially when it comes to controlling the lighting separately from the fan speed, even when your electrical wiring did not provide separate wall switches. Identifying and wiring ceiling fan remote control units.

Single Switch Control for the Fan and Light

  • The switch operates the power going to the ceiling box, and the power is either "on" or "off".
  • You still have the option of using the pull chains as desired, however you could get confused if you turn the ceiling fan or light "off" using the pull chain method and wonder why the wall switch does not operate the ceiling fan or light.

Single Switch for Fan and a Dimmer for the Light

  • When having separate controls for the ceiling fan you will need separate wires going from the wall switch box to the ceiling fan box.
  • The location of the power source will have a bearing on how many wires will need to be installed between the switch box and the ceiling fan box.
  • The requirement is that the ceiling fan must have a separate wire for each switched function.
  • The neutral is shared by the fan and the light. I'm assuming your home has a ground found at all the junction boxes, if not I encourage you to have your wiring upgraded asap.

Additional Circuit Wiring for a Ceiling Fan

Planning the Ceiling Fan Power Source
Question from Buddy: I ran wire to a new fan, I have put in 3 wall switches, after all was done fan and light were fine, I buttoned every thing up and I turned it on and nothing worked, called a electrician friend of mine and he says that I have to come off another circuit for me to put a junction box up in the attic and come off the garage door opener. Any thoughts on this?

Buddy, the electrician may have identified that the wiring that was added came from a circuit that does not have enough capacity for the added electrical loads. If this is the case then the electrician is correct to recommend that a new circuit is required.

Question from Daryl: I need a diagram for wiring two ceiling fans, to one switch.

Daryl, the cable leads to the first ceiling fan, then a second cable loops to the next ceiling fan.

Ceiling Fan Electrical Power Problem

Marianne, from Athens, Texas asks:
We have a 2 story home and the upstairs seems to have some kind of electrical problem. The house was built in 2001 and we purchased it in 2006. When we purchased the house we replaced all of the ceiling fans because the old ones did not seem to work properly. With the new fans (light kit included), the fans do not seem to turn fast enough on high speed. We used the exact same model and brand in our previous house and they worked great! There are four fans upstairs each one has the same problem. In addition to this, I have a computer that is located in the loft area of the upstairs. The original computer had major problems with running too slow so we purchased a new one which should have solved the slow speed problem. The new computer also runs very slow. I was wondering if there is something in the electrical system that could cause these problems.

Dave's Reply
The power source for the devices that you are describing should be tested to see if the voltage is correct. The electrical circuits which are providing the power to these devices should be inspected and tested by a qualified electrician.
